Since Mackenzie was a young girl, she knew that she wanted to be a teacher. After dozens of years in school and higher education, she received her Ph.D. in English with a specialization in Writing from University of Illinois at Chicago. Along the way, she had the opportunity to teach a wide range of classes in writing and reading: Creative Writing, Expository Writing, formal Academic Writing, and the list goes on and on.
After Mackenzie moved back to Colorado with her family, she knew she had found her permanent home in the Denver metro area. With limited opportunities to obtain a tenure-track position teaching writing in Denver, Mackenzie started to explore other opportunities to use her skills professionally. She stumbled upon a position in Instructional Design and editing where she recieved a large amount of on-the-job training developing curriculum for e-learning platforms and managing large learning management systems (LMSs). Over the next few years, she taught at writing at a local University and focused on her own creative writing projects. She was eventually offered a more permanent job at a large, international corporation where she headed the Learning team's curriculum development project to train their counterparts in India and in other global markets. From this experience, Mackenzie realized that in both large and small organizations, the need for specified training in writing and communication skills is extremely large. She also came to the realization that the training she was doing in a large corporate environment wasn't so very different from the classes she was teaching in a purely academic setting. Her ability to help others produce quality and focused writing is a universal need, regardless of the learning environment.
With this knowledge and experience in mind, Mackenzie decided to branch out and start TypeCraft in an attempt to offer businesses and individuals the opportunity to refine their writing skills. Her deep subject-matter expertise coupled with her educational and corporate experience come together to make her a balanced leader at TypeCraft.
She also remains very active in the community by taking part in various writing projects like heading the Girls on the Run, Chicago Grant Writing committee and forming a collaborative arts organization with a group of dancers and musicians called The Fuzion Project. Her poetry is widely published and has won many awards. For nearly four years, she edited an online literary magazine called Listenlight that publishes innovative poetry. She is also part of the Black Radish Books publishing collective and serves on their Board.

Founded in Broomfield, Colorado in 2013, TypeCraft is a budding-new, service-based organization that seeks to solve a widespread problem in professional operations: bad writers producing bad writing. The founder, Mackenzie Carignan, has worked on projects in all different kinds of learning environments. Through these many diverse experiences, she has seen how great the need is for a specialized training service. Based on this great need and her deep knowledge and experience teaching writing, she started TypeCraft in order to fill this need.
TypeCraft Writing Services focuses primarily on working with and training groups of professionals both domestically and internationally in order to improve writing quality, efficiency, and overall effectiveness. We are able to use our professionally created Assessment tool to pinpoint your specific deficiencies. We then custom-create a curriculum that will best target the areas that ned the most improvement. We also use our own AiM (Audience in Mind) philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of the audience in the writing process, a key element that is often forgotten in the crafting of countless messages.
Our unique blend of experience teaching student writers as well as writers in professional organizations gives us the eye for the highest quality of writing as well as the inherent drive to create high-quality writers in your organization.
